When Your Skin Resembles Dragon Scales

This is not a good look for me.

I know I can’t be the only one having serious skin issues in winter. With the cold weather outside, and the drying heat inside, my skin is seriously dry. It’s not pretty… especially when your skin resembles dragon scales.

While cooking dinner the other day I thought of an idea so simple, I still can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner.

Just take a big pot of water, set it on the stove, and let it boil until it’s gone. A super simple air humidifier.

I’m thinking about getting some apple juice and sticks of cinnamon and boiling them so my apartment can smell amazing as well.

Rosebud Salve

I had someone tell me today that they’ve never ever heard of Rosebud Salve. What is this madness! Really?! This stuff is amazing! I’m in shock beyond words.

Maintaining Red Hair

I loved being a redhead, but keeping up with the color – not so much. While using products just for colored hair helped a bit, my hair just wasn’t at the level I wanted it to be. I just want some bright hair a la The Little Mermaid! Is that so hard?

I recently watched some random video on YouTube about dying red hair, and the woman making the vid said she used temporary hair color in between colorings.
This is genius! Why didn’t I think of this?!

I just dyed my hair black so I’ll just have to wait to test this tip out. Wait…I have some blue temporary dye underneath the sink in the bathroom! That’ll look awesome with black hair!

Guy Pretty VS Girl Pretty

I found this on Glamour and thought this was interesting, although I really don’t care what men think about my beauty routine.

Plus Mila Kunis is just so damn pretty!

Advice From Unlikely Places

**I had this published on my other blog Lunacy and Best Wishes, but I thought I would post it again here as well.

I received an e-mail from someone asking advice about how to prevent razor burn. This used to be a big problem for me so I’ve got just the answer for you.

My cure for razor burn came from the most unlikely, yet absolutely perfect sources. . . Their names were Barbie and Mercedes. . . exotic dancers paying their way through college.

1. Exfoliate. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy dancy. I just use apricot scrub and a washcloth.

2. Barbie said, “Don’t use shaving cream, use hair conditioner.” I thought this was weird, but it actually works better. Again, I don’t use anything expensive; just the cheapest brand at the grocery store.

3. Use a new(ish) razor and shave in the direction of the hair growth, then against the hair growth, then from side to side. Also it’s important to take your time.

4. After you get out of the shower, use unscented lotion that is made for sensitive skin on your legs. For underarms and your bikini area, Barbie said that deodorant works the best. Yeah I thought that was weird too, using deodorant your nether regions, but apparently this is a common trick among strippers that they swear by.

If you still have razor burn, Bikini Zone cream was recommended by Mercedes. In extreme cases, although it burns like a motherfucker, Mercedes also recommends rubbing alcohol mixed with water in a spray bottle. I personally have never tried this, but I figure it’s worth a try.

So I thought being dragged out to the titty bar would be a horrible experience, but in reality, it wasn’t that bad. I actually got some wonderful hair, makeup, and skincare tips. I also find it ironic that out of the group of guys I was with, I got all the attention ;) It still makes me chuckle.

Sharpie as Eyeliner?

I did this once on a road trip and it lasted for about 3 days. I used a fine point Sharpie and luckily I didn’t make any mistakes. Even Taylor Swift has tried this trick before!

It does make me want to research more into tattoo eyeliner though. I wear the same black liquid eyeliner in the exact same way almost every day. It’s too the point where I think I look weird about it.

Have any of you ever tried using a Sharpie as eyeliner, or have tattooed eyeliner? Share your thoughts!

V is for Vanity

When I was about 6 years old, my parents got me this pink plastic vanity for Christmas. It came complete with hair accessories and Mary Kay samples. From that moment on I was hooked on almost everything hair and makeup related.

I think that there is something so feminine and glamorous about vanities.
When I was a kid it made me feel like a movie star. It’s one of those simple things that can make my day just that much better.

Now obviously I’m too old to have a bubblegum colored vanity made in China, so I think it’s time to upgrade. Though I can think of plenty of other ways I should spend my money, a proper vanity is going to be my next furniture purchase.

The Caramel Hair Treatment

I tried this a few weeks ago for the first time, and I have to say I was blown away. My hair was left so soft and shiny that I cannot stop running my fingers through it. I think it’s actually getting to a point where people think I have a problem :O Anyways, I wanted to share the ingredients that I used.

Honey, olive oil, banana baby food, molasses, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, cocoa butter, and cornstarch (to thicken the mixture).

I wish I could give you the exact measurements I used, but I can never keep track of that kind of stuff. A friend and I just kind of guessed how much of each ingredient we needed and hoped that it turned out right! When it is done though, it should have the look and consistancy of caramel sauce- hence the name.

I left this in my hair for about an hour. I have to say this is the best my hair has felt in a loooong time. Normally I over process my hair with color and relaxer, but this made my hair look so good to the point where people think I’m wearing a wig. It also helped relax the natural curl and frizziness my hair has.

I was always skeptical about natural hair products, but they’re working wonders for my hair. It also makes me want to learn how to make actual caramel!

Maybe She's Born With It...

Nope! It’s Maybelline!

I was at the drugstore the other day and found these green and yellow concealer sticks. I’ve heard good things about these type of color concealers, so I decided to give them a try. Where have you been all my life!

I’ve always been paranoid about the dark circles underneath my eyes, but the yellow concealer covered them up nicely. I almost didn’t have to put foundation over the top of it.

The green concealer is wonderful too. For any makeup newbies, the green counteracts the color red, so it’s great for covering up acne or inflamed skin. In my profile picture, you can see that I have a red bow tattoo. This concealer (along with foundation over top) was able to cover it completely. Normally I would have to use Dermablend to do that.

These products are definitely going on my list of must haves!

*I wasn’t paid to endorse these products.

Jada’s Dynamic Duo

I was looking for hair products with natural ingredients because I was curious to see if they would actually work on my hair type. My aunt recommended Carol’s Daughter, and I’m so glad she did.
Lisa’s Hair Elixir is the first product. I love how it moisturizes my hair without leaving it greasy. I also like how it has peppermint oil in it so my hair doesn’t end up smelling like a garden.

I use it when my hair is dry, usually after I flat iron it or when it needs a bit of moisture. It also makes a great hot oil treatment. When I do this though, I usually mix a 50/50 ratio with olive oil to save money.

The next product is the Hair Balm. It has a really sweet smell because it’s made with sweet almond and coconut oil. I also use this when my hair is dry. This liquid pomade is great for taming flyaways or when my hair gets a bit poofy from the weather. The only downside is that the bottle is only 4 ounces (118 ml) as compared to the elixir, in which you get twice the amount.

Overall I would recommend this product to my fellow curly girls. Even though I think $30 + is a bit pricy, I believe the balm and elixir are worth it. I’ve seen a noticeable difference in my hair in only a few months. It’s not nearly as crunchy as it used to be and there seems to be less breakage.

I wasn’t paid to endorse these products, I bought them on my own free will. If you would like more information on these products click here.

Vintage Beauty Facts

I thought this slideshow from UK Glamour was pretty interesting. Especially Marilyn Monroe’s foundation routine! I would NEVER go to that extreme for glowing skin.

Lets Get Glam

no more lazy days

"I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little - if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny."

Ladies, I completely agree with Coco Chanel on this one. I’m not saying you have to put on a full face of makeup and your best hair weave just to go to the grocery store, but at least make yourself presentable.

I’m also not trying to say that I look perfect all the time either, but over the years I’ve found a few items that help. I can leave the house in basic jeans and a t shirt, but not feel like a slob.

-Chandelier earrings
-A cute pair of high heels
-A stylish handbag
-False eyelashes add instant glam and only take a minute to put on (after practice of course!)
-Red lipstick with black liquid eyeliner for that pinup girl effect.

Have Your Cake & Eat It Too!

So I’ve finally decided to give into temptation and start a beauty blog! I’m going to (hopefully) start cosmetology school soon so I need an outlet to share my ideas and inspiration.

I’m in love with vintage style looks, hence the name Lipstick and Cheesecake, so expect a lot of things of that nature.

And for those of you that read Lunacy and Best Wishes, don’t worry, I’ll still be posting on a somewhat regular basis.

So please keep checking back, I have a lot of great ideas!
